DO I NEED TO SPEAK A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TO BE AN AFS VOLUNTEER?
Volunteers are not required to speak a foreign language, although it can be a great way to learn or brush up! But also keep in mind that the AFS participant come to South Africa to learn and improve their abilities in a foreign language.

HOW MUCH TIME DO I NEED TO GIVE TO AFS AS A VOLUNTEER?
There is no set requirement for how much time you give AFS. Some volunteers choose to focus their work on a single activity within their community. AFS welcomes your support and respects your availability.

WHAT ARE AFS VOLUNTEERS RESPONSIBLE FOR?
There are many ways you can help AFS with your volunteer time. AFS volunteers on a local level help coordinate recruitment, selection, placement, preparation and support activities for AFS participants and host families. Volunteers also help with fundraising and volunteer training and development. Local volunteers also arrange various social AFS activities and events.

WHAT IS A CHAPTER?
A Chapter is a group of volunteers in a community. There are AFS volunteers living in many parts of South Africa – some contribute as individuals, and others have joined a chapter in their area. Chapters perform many functions related to the programs, such as counselling and orientations, but they also provide an environment, which enables volunteers to socialise and meet new people. Generally, the volunteers in a chapter would meet monthly.

One of the powers of the chapter is to guide AFS by electing fellow volunteers to the National Board.

WHAT IF THERE IS NO ACTIVE CHAPTER IN MY AREA?
You can create a chapter in your area! Being an official chapter with AFS means that you have moral and financial support to run AFS Activities.

The following are the criteria to form a chapter:
· You must have a group of five or more willing volunteers
· Be prepared to open a Chapter bank account with two signatories
· At least one member should be contactable by fax, telephone and/or e-mail
· You will be given a manual explaining AFS policy and procedure
· Have received or arrange to receive training on the role of the chapter, responsibilities and risk management issues
· Have received or arrange to receive contact person training
· Must agree to submit monthly chapter meeting minutes
· Must send contact person reports to the National office monthly (these can be included in the meeting minutes)
· Must agree to abide by the rules set out by AFS Interculture South Africa and try at all times to maintain the AFS Quality Standards
· Be approved by the executive or National Board

*All people are invited to start chapters. There is no special qualification required. If you gather a group of interested people we will help with the rest.
