Since the elections in 1994, South Africa has become a prime tourist destination. People of all ages, from countries around the world are curious about a nation that made a peaceful transition from Apartheid to a Democratic society. AFS provides a safe means for young people to experience life in this country : to enjoy our multi-cultural society, learn our languages, study in our school system, enjoy the beauty of the country , and most importantly to live with a host family. AFS Interculture South Africa places students in host families of all kinds of culture, in towns and cities throughout the country.
HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMME
Hosting an international exchange student is a great way to expose your family to a new culture while building a sincere, long-lasting relationship with someone from another country. Hosting is about love and sharing, and approximately 190 South African families per year take part in the unforgettable experience of hosting a foreign participant. The hosting period varies from two months (Intensive Programme) to 11 months and the participants are 16-18 years old on arrival in South Africa. They have all been through a strict selection process and have been identified as leaders in their own communities. They are committed to adapting to a new family, studying at a South African school, learning new languages, meeting new people and being ambassadors for their country and AFS.
COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM
Host a participant of over 18 years of age while they volunteer for a local community organization and live with you as a family member, but with more independence.
EDUCATOR PROGRAM
Host a teacher while they participate on a 4 week program to visit schools and live in your home, learning about South African families as adult participants.
South Africa is a beautiful country and a melting pot of religions, languages and cultures. You can play a part in sharing our country and your culture with the world. The success of student exchange programmes really depends on the generosity of families like your own who decide to take on this adventure.
