Short Term Exchange Programme of The Ministry of Education of Baden-Wuerttemberg to Baden-Wuerttemberg area Coordinated by AFS Interkulturelle Begegnungen e.V.
In Cooperation with AFS Interculture South Africa

In 2006, AFS Germany was assigned by the Ministry of Education of Baden-Wurttemberg to coordinate this governmental short-term exchange programme. Since then, the programme has been running as programme of the Ministry of Education of Baden-Württemberg in cooperation with AFS Germany.

Main characteristics of the programme:

  • Departure from Johannesburg: 3 December 2009
  • Return to Johannesburg: 30 January 2010
  • Reciprocal exchange, on a one-to-one family basis
  • Duration 2 months (hosting) + 2 months (sending) to Badem-Wuerttemberg
  • Age of the students: ca. 15-17,4 years old
  • Willingness to learn German required; basic language skills are desirable
  • Regular school attendance required
  • Open to applicants from all school types

The short-term programme is based on a strict reciprocity of families. The exchange is consecutive, which means not at the same time. The exchange of families in a reciprocal programme leads to more intense exchange experience for the participants than in conventional, non-reciprocal programme.

Programme Fees:

The programme costs R22 200 (on condition of reciprocity) and R29 900 (if boarder or reciprocity is not possible). The programme is fully covered by the participants and includes:

  • International travel (in Germany: to Stuttgart)
  • Insurance
  • Tuition fee (if necessary)
  • Costs for selection and preparation process
  • Chaperones (if necessary)
  • Support before and during the exchange of all participants (student, sending and hosting family, also at school by the teacher)

Deadline: 20 July 2009
