Gap Year for High School Graduates

Take up the Challenge! Dedicate anywhere from 3 months, 5 months, or an entire Gap Year of your life!

SERVE AS A VOLUNTEER ABROAD ON THE COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

Are you 18 years or older?
Are you looking for an opportunity to explore another culture?
Do you want to make a positive contribution to the world in which you live?

AFS is looking for people with an open mind, open heart, time and energy.

AFS takes its name from the American Field Service, the corps of volunteer ambulance drivers that served with the US and British forces during the First and Second World Wars. After the Wars, some ambulance drivers decided to promote world peace through cross cultural exchanges and AFS as an exchange student organization exists as a result.

This spirit of serving and a desire to see the promotion of world peace continues through the Community Service Program. Come and be a part of this magnificent heritage – make your life count while serving others.

As a participant on this program, you will be fully immersed in a culture far from South Africa, while getting hands-on experience that will prepare you to face challenges throughout your future life.

AFS Community Service Program Participants volunteer with local organizations that address community needs such as helping street children lead healthier lives or developing training programs with human rights workers. During the program, participants are exposed to new customs and values that challenge them to reflect on their own cultural norms. This intercultural learning process develops in participants not only a deeper understanding of another culture but, perhaps most profoundly, a richer awareness of their own background.

South Africa-Mozambique Regional Exchange Program

A new intercultural exchange programme between South Africa and Mozambique called SayXchange, was officially launched on the 4th of February 2010.
